Kennedy kids lop their locks
The students at James Kennedy Elementary in Walnut Grove went beyond the call of duty in supporting the Canadian Cancer Society in April.
They took part in an event called Locks From Langley.
In addition to raising $3,112.64 by donations from sales of the Daffodil pins, a total of 16 students had their hair cut in support of cancer research and cancer patients.
In addition, a mother and a teacher had their hair cut as well. Ten girls had their hair cut and donated to Miss Rose, to make wigs for children who lose their hair due to chemotherapy.
Six boys at the school had their heads buzzed to show their support.
One Grade 1 student, Sophia Green, raised more than $1,100 for cancer research.
The students ended their month’s fundraiser with the haircuts and an assembly, at which time a cheque was presented to Canadian CancerSociety volunteers Toots Tucker and Diana Beglaw.
The students showed a lot of enthusiasm for the cause and had a lot of fun in the process, said co-ordinator Sue Rhea.
They also served to raise awarenesss about cancer and the need for research in the school community to fight cancer and help find a cure.
