Border runner arrested with drugs
A tip from the U.S. Border Patrol led Langley RCMP to more than a million dollars worth of ecstasy over the weekend.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, police received information about a suspicious man hiding in the ditch in the 27200 block of 0 Avenue, just north of the border.
The man was located with the help of air services and a police dog. He attempted to flee. However, the dog and handler were able to track him, and the suspect was taken into custody. He was in possession of two large duffel bags containing 20 individually wrapped packages of a substance believed to be MDMA (ecstasy).
The narcotics weighed more than 20 kg and have a street value of over $1 million.
Samuel Lopez-Rios, 30, of Mexico, has been charged with one count each of trafficking in a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on Sept. 27.
Langley RCMP credit a close working relationship with their partners in the U.S. Border Service for the arrest and seizure.
