Police pursuit caught on tape
Langley RCMP have caught on video the dramatic arrest of two men who led police on a chase and to a cache of stolen vehicles.
On Wednesday, police arrested Langley resident Derek David Allenby, 21, and Abbotsford resident Darcy Todd Mandy, 44. Each faces charges of possession of stolen property and dangerous driving.
The video shows a pickup truck speeding through school zones and the driver attempting to dump his vehicle for an awaiting car, with police tracking every move in the RCMP’s Air One helicopter.
“This is a significant arrest and is an example of the value of Air One,” RCMP Cpl. Peter Thiessen said.
He said police in cruisers managed to stay well back from the fleeing truck because of constant surveillance from the air.
Sometime on Monday or Tuesday, a 2002 Bobcat T190 on a 2001 Westcoast flatdeck hydraulic trailer was stolen from the 6300 block of 224 Street.
Police received information Wednesday that helped them gain a search warrant on a South Surrey farm, at 3762 176 St.
When police arrived, they saw two men drive onto the rural farm, and proceed to the stolen Bobcat.
Police watched as the two drove a Ford F250 pickup onto the property. The suspects appeared to be attempting to back it into a 53-foot shipping container, standing beside the Bobcat.
When officers walked onto the property, two men fled – one in the pickup, the other on foot. The suspect on foot was arrested after a brief chase.
RCMP’s Air One tracked the fleeing truck, relaying information to patrol cars.
Thiessen said the truck's driver drove erratically without knowing he was being followed.
Police believe he called a female friend to pick him up after he dumped the stolen Ford. She was waiting, but he was cornered in the 18900 block of 86 Avenue by police.
The truck was stolen Tuesday from the 5700 block of Langley Bypass.
Allenby was recently released from prison.
Both suspects were in custody, and were to appear in Surrey Provincial Court Friday.
Located inside the shipping container on the South Surrey farm were a 1993 Honda CBR900 motorcycle, reported missing Oct. 27 in Langley, and a Honda Civic missing from Abbotsford last month.
Stolen licence plates were located inside the Civic.
Stolen Saskatchewan licence plates were recovered beside the shipping container, which was stolen on Oct. 26 in Surrey.
Police said it isn’t clear where the containers were to be shipped.
