A single-vehicle accident tied up traffic both ways on Highway 99, just south of 24 Avenue, around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

RCMP E Divison Traffic Services media coordinator Cst. Melissa Wutke said unconfirmed reports from members still dealing with the incident were that it was a pickup truck that rolled with two occupants.

“It didn’t look like either had life-threatening injuries,” Wutke said, adding that the accident “may have looked worse than it was.”

Other updates indicated that it may have been the result of a medical incident, she said.

“There is no suspected speed or alcohol involvement,” she said.

Traffic was backed up in both directions as an air ambulance helicopter landed on the southbound lane of the freeway shortly after 8 a.m. The helicopter reportedly picked up one of the occupants of the truck for transfer to hospital.

Traffic reopened northbound shortly before 9 a.m. but was still at a standstill southbound for several minutes after that.

Wutke said just before 11 a.m. that most recent reports from members were that they were waiting for a tow truck to remove the damaged vehicle at that time.
