Campaign a success

Editor: Aleesa Paterson and the members of the Spirit Bear Group from Langley Fine Arts School were invited to the official unveiling of the 2010 Olympic Mascot held in Surrey.

They were met by CTV’s Mike Killeen and spoke with him of their work. For more than a year, they raised awareness of the Spirit Bear and the concern they have for the future of its natural habitat.

With the help of Sonya Paterson of Leaders Now BC (no relation to Aleesa), in their attempts to raise awareness they collected 1,000 letters nominating the Spirit Bear for the 2010 mascot.

These were delivered to VANOC and received by executive vice-president Dave Cobb and Ali Gardiner, director, brand and creative services. They also had the opportunity to meet and hear from Simon Jackson, a well-known youth leader and advocate for the Spirit Bear. The group was excited that the story of the mascot included the Spirit Bear and they hope that awareness grows as the world hears the mascot story.

The group thanks all of the supporters of their project. It has been a very rewarding experience for all.

 Shirley Paterson,

Langley
