2011 Cruise-In was great
Editor: If you don’t leave, how will I know how much I miss you?
Well, I tell you, we all missed the Langley Good-Times Cruise-In last year. After a one-year hiatus in 2010, Western Canada’s largest car show returned in 2011 on Sept. 10, with a bang.
The volunteer directors took last year off, stepping back to valuate the direction of the show, among other issues.
They, along with their committee members and group of volunteers, put in a lot of unpaid hours, and it showed by the way they pulled it off. The crowds of close to 100,000 in downtown Langley City was an awesome sight to see again, as God kissed this year’s event with perfect clear blue skies and one of the hottest days we experienced this delayed summer.
The Friday night before the event had its share of people who, instead of just cruising the strip, felt the urge to light up their tires. The police presence was very visible and they had the situation under control, by warning, fining and towing vehicles. It was some of these non-sanctioned activities that put the show in jeopardy, as many outsiders associated it with the Cruise-In.
The Mopac Performance Friday Night Street Legals were on as well at Mission Raceway Park, where you could get your fix of smoky burnouts until dusk, in a safe, organized environment.
On Sunday, if you didn’t quite get your fill, there was a Cruise-In swap meet at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where the vendors and prospective buyers talked about how good the sales and bargains to be had were. The Langley Speedway Historical Society also had their annual day down at the old track at the foot of 208 Street, where memorabilia and cars from the past lined the cleaned-up oval blacktop and visitors could reminisce about yesteryear.
Steve Elliot as "Elvis" rocked the crowd — of all ages.
I applaud Cruise-In president Riccardo Sestito and his crew who made the City of Langley, The Place To Be ... proud again.
