Swimmers shine at Victoria meet
The 2011 BC AAA Championships were held last weekend at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool in Victoria. A team of 19 swimmers from Langley Olympians Swim Club were in attendance along with Head Coach, Brian Metcalfe and Assistant Head Coach, Rhonda Mackay. The Langley swimmers were on top form as they came away with a large collection of medals, Club Records and Age Group National qualifying times.
Robyn Nakano (11) won 2 gold medals in the 11 & under 100 fly and 200 fly. She smashed her previous best time in the 200 fly to go 2:40.34 giving her an Age Group National qualifying time. She went on to place 3rd in the 200 back , 4th in the 100 back and 7th in the 200 IM. Langley’s other Age Group National qualifier was Siobhan Board (13) in the 100 back in a time of 1:10.18 and 200 back, 2:31.36. Siobhan placed 6th in the 100 back and 7th in the 200 back and 100 free.
Chelsea Borrowdale (11) also reigned supreme in the girls 11& under category winning gold in 100 breast, 200 breast, 3rd in the 800 free, 400 IM and 4th in the 400 free and 200 IM. Chelsea also came away with 100% best times over the 4 day meet.
Hillary Metcalfe (12) brought home 4 gold medals and 2 silver along with a host of new Club Records. Hillary’s wins were in 100 breast, 200 breast (Club Record 2:39.54), 400 free (Club Record 4:36.47) and 200 IM (Club Record 2:27.30); her silvers were in 800 free (Club Record 9:29.69) and 100 free (Club Record 1:00.53). Hillary also broke the Club Records in 50 free (28.49) and 50 fly (32.64).
Justin Schramm (13) made the 2011 Prospects West Team as the highest FINA points scoring 13 year old boy in the fly events. Justin won gold in the 200 fly, bronze in 100 fly and placed 4th in 400 IM, 6th in 1500 free, 400 free and 200 free. He also came away with 100% best times.
Other Langley swimmers making finals were Kennedy Douglas (11) 2nd in 100 breast, 4th in 200 breast, 7th in 800 free and 400 IM and 8th in 200 IM; Renae Ledoux (11) 2nd in 100 free, 5th in 200 breast and 7th in 50 free; Kelley MacDonald (11) 4th in 100 breast and 7th in 200 breast, also achieving 100% best times; Michael MacDonald (15) 1st in 100 free, 3rd in 1500 free and 100 back, 5th in 400 free and 6th in 200 back; Martha Metcalfe (14) 2nd in 400 IM, 4th in 800 free, 6th in 200 fly and 200 IM and 7th in 200 breast; Emily d’Entremont (11) 7th in 100 fly; Ryan Moloney 7th in 1500 free; Gabriella Szalkai (11) 4th in 100 fly, 6th in 200 fly and 7th in 100 free, also achieving 100% best times; Kate Thomson (15) 3rd in 400 IM, 7th in 200 IM and 8th in 100 fly and 100 breast.
Langley Olympians Swim Club finished the meet in overall 11th place.
Head Coach Brian Metcalfe said of the meet and his swimmers performances, “This was a fantastic meet for us and all our swimmers raced extremely well. It was great to see Justin making the Prospects West Team and Robyn and Siobhan making AGN. Our young swimmers are improving all the time and impressing me at every meet. They are tough, focused and determined, making me very proud every time I watch them race.”
