Dominant pitching helps Jr. Blaze to perfect weekend
A pair of dominant pitching performances, which included a no-hitter and a one-hitter, helped the Langley Jr. Blaze move closer to clinching the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League pennant with three wins over the weekend.
The U16 team (33-5) has a six-game lead with 10 games remaining.
Ashton Mantle tossed a no-hitter over five innings during Friday night’s 10-0 victory against the Abbotsford Jr. Cardinals at McLeod Park.
Tyler O’Neill, Nick Rutckyj and Matt Strother drove in two runs apiece, while Michael Dagg, Mitchell Robinson and Mike Billows each had an RBI.
And on Sunday, the Blaze were at Mackie Park, where they swept the North Delta Jr. Blue Jays, 6-4 and 12-0.
In the opener, Langley trailed 4-3 after five innings, but tied the score in the sixth to force extra innings and then won with a pair of runs in the ninth.
O’Neill, who also picked up the win on the mound, drove in two more runs.
The final game saw Mitchell Kennedy allow just one hit in the 12-0 win.
Justin Lawrence drove on three runs and Cody Faulkner brought in another pair.
