Gators take top spot at Fraser Valleys

The Walnut Grove Gators were tops at the Fraser Valley cross-country championships in both junior divisions.

The race was held at Aldergrove Lake Park on Oct. 26.

The way scoring works is a teams top five runners score points based on their finish and the lowest overall score wins.

The Gator girls scored 84 to beat out Semiahmoo, who had 116.

Dallas Tilley was the top Walnut Grove runner, finishing the 5-km race in 19:43.24, good for seventh.

Katie Ussher (13th), Taylor Gillis (14th), Julie Matson (16th) and Cyrena Timmins (20th) also cracked the top 20.

D.W. Poppy’s Alix Johnson was 18th.

In the junior boys’ race, Walnut Grove had 32 while Elgin Park scored 41.

Langley Christian’s Nick Colyn was the top local runner, finishing the 5-km race in 19:24.02

Brookswood’s Tyler de Jong was sixth and Kieran Jenkins (Walnut Grove) was seventh.

Other to 20 results were: James Lam (Walnut Grove, 11th), Richard Torres (Walnut Grove, 13th), Michael Pratt (Brookswood, 14th), Erick Chmelyk (Walnut Grove, 16th), Jim Harradine (Walnut Grove, 19th).

In the Grade 8 race, the Walnut Grove boys’ were first overall, with a 27, while Langley Christian took second with 40.

Langley Christian’s Jesiah Orr was second overall, while Walnut Grove’s Dawson Brown and Daniel Stead were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Other top 20 finished included: Austin Dumont (Walnut Grove, ninth), Brennan Gardiner (Langley Christian, 10th), Daniel Paulik (R.E. Mountain, 12th), Jon MacAdam (Langley Christian, 16th), Travis Thiessen (Walnut Grove, 19th) and Brandon Koch (Langley Christian, 20th).

In the Grade 8 girls’ race, Langley Christian’s Kiana Dekar who was sixth overall.

D.W. Poppy’s Chloe Hetherington was 20th.

And in the senior competition, both Walnut Grove teams placed second.

The Gators girls were runner-ups to W.J. Mouat, finishing with 100 points compared to Mouat’s 88.

Walnut Grove’s Ashley Windsor was second overall.

Teammate Andrea Robinson also cracked the top 20, placing 16th.

In the boys’ category, Kwantlen Park scored 46 and the Gators had 99.

The top local runners in the race were Brookswood’s Adam Marshall, who came 14th, and Walnut Grove’s Sean Burnett, who was 15th.

The provincial championships are Saturday (Nov. 5) in Kelowna.
