Storm hammers Credo

From sixth to fourth and now second. That has been the progression of the Credo Christian senior girls basketball team.

The Kodiaks finished second at the Single A Fraser Valley championships over the weekend, falling 72-39 in the championship game to the Southridge Storm on Saturday night.

Laura VanTil led Credo with a dozen points.

But a thrilling 50-48 victory the night before in the semifinals against Credo’s local rival, the Langley Christian Lightning, guaranteed the Kodiaks a spot in next week’s provincial championships.

They will be held in Prince George at Cedars Christian from March 7-10.

The Kodiaks are making their first appearance at provincials in five years.

“It was a realistic goal at the start of the year,” said Kodiaks coach Arthur deLeeuw, who has coached this squad for the past four seasons.

In the most recent rankings, Credo was listed 10th after previously being an honourable mention in the Top 10 polls.

Carolyn deLeeuw and Kristen Schouten earned Fraser Valley all-star awards.

Langley Christian’s Megan Hummelman was also an all-star.

The Lightning finished fourth, losing the bronze medal game to Unity Christian.
