Langley weathers PoCo Storm

A youth soccer team had to overcome not only a short roster, but a halftime deficit, and they did, capturing the U14 district soccer championship.

Langley Youth Soccer Association’s U14 house C boys squad scored twice in the second half to weather the Port Coquitlam Storm 2-1 at the Langley Events Centre in the Fraser Valley district finals.

The Langley squad had just 12 players because of injury and sickness, meaning they had a lone sub, while the Storm had five or six bodies on the side ready to go in.

Trailing at the half, Langley struck for the tying goal early in the second half and then scored the winner on a penalty kick.

“We started the season a little bit slow, trying to get everybody up to speed,” said coach Bruce Laidlaw.

“But as the season went on, we got stronger.”

Langley was 4-3-4 during the regular season, but won all six of their games at the district tournament.

“They really stood on their heads and in some cases, played beyond their abilities,” Laidlaw said.

“They really played hard.”

The team is made up of Curtis Abgrall, Jeremy Baron, Brenden Bourgeois, David Chang, Dan Djuric, Damon Donaldson, Ryan Garnder, Mark Giesbrecht, Kaleb Bryant, K;nayawsoe, Jordon Mathie, James Murphy, Bricen Sture and Taylor Tsoukalas.
