Rams' Downey honoured as top special teams player

After etching his name in the record books, Langley Rams' Nick Downey was named the B.C. Football Conference special teams player of the week for week three.

Downey had 201 yards on seven punt returns — two of which he ran all the way back for scores — in the Rams 66-8 demolition of the Chilliwack Huskers on Aug. 18.

And with that amount, Downey reached 2,400 yards for his BCFC career, surpassing the previous record of 2,393 yards held by former Vancouver Island Shark/Victoria Rebels player Jason Marsh, who played from 1997 to 2001.

Downey, in his fourth year with the Rams, still has seven games to add to his growing total.

He is both the three-time league and Canadian national kick returner of the year.

Langley (2-0-1) faces the Okanagan Sun (1-2) in week four action on Aug. 25. Game time is 7 p.m. at McLeod Park.
