Klimek sinks Rivermen with OT winner
It was a Langley player who played hero in double overtime, but unfortunately, Jordan Klimek plays for the Surrey Eagles.
Klimek struck 1:32 into the second overtime on Nov. 1 at the Langley Events Centre.
On the winning play — with the teams playing three skaters aside — Mason Blacklock won the draw back to Klimek, whose wrist shot beat Langley Rivermen goaltender James Barr.
It was Surrey's sixth shot of overtime.
The only other goals of the game came in the first period, less than three minutes apart.
Surrey's Brett Mulcahy opened the scoring, taking a pass from Trevor Cameron and burying the shot top corner past Barr.
Langley responded with a fluke goal as Ben Butcher skated into the Eagles zone and let a soft shot go towards the net.
Somehow, the puck eluded Surrey goalie Michael Santaguida.
But that would be the only puck that got past the goaltender, who finished with 33 saves to earn second star honours.
Barr, with 29 saves, was the game's first star after making several huge stops, including an overtime breakaway chance.
Langley's record fell to 7-7-0-3.
The Rivermen are back in action on Nov. 2 when they host the division-leading Prince George Spruce Kings. Puck drop is 7:15 p.m. at the LEC.
