Spartans sign former Langley sniper

Matt Ius' travelling days are over.

Having played junior hockey for seven different franchises in the Western Hockey League and the B.C. Hockey League — including time with the Langley Chiefs — and then one semester at the Canada West level with the Mount Royal Cougars, Ius is hoping to settle down.

The Pitt Meadows resident is joining the Trinity Western Spartans hockey club.

"I've spent enough time away from my family, so it was time to make a decision to come home," Ius said.

"I saw an opportunity here to build a winner.

"I'm ready to be here for the next four years, get a degree and win a couple of championships."

He is expected to inject both energy and offensive punch into a Spartan line-up that scored a BCIHL league-low 29 goals in 11 games this year.

"I'll bring hard work and physical play, and hopefully, with that work, goals will come."

Ius played just four games with Mount Royal because of injury, and managed three assists.

In his final year of junior hockey (2010/11), Ius racked up 28 goals and 39 assists in 46 games for Langley and then added another 20 points in 10 playoff games.

"Matt definitely has a nose for the net, but he's also an all-around player," said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk.

"To have a player like Matt coming to our team is a great boon for us this season and for the future."

The Spartans resume play from the semester break when they travel to Victoria on Jan. 5.

The team is 1-9-0-1 on the season.
