Langley duo on Canadian roster

Langley's Kacy Hannesson Jennifer Wakefield are among the 57 players from across the country who will be in Ottawa for a three-day Ringette Canada senior national team selection camp.

The purpose of the camp, which runs Feb. 15 to Feb. 17, is to identify which player will don the Maple Leaf and represent Canada at the 2013 world ringette championships. They will be held in North Bay, Ont. at the end of December.

"At the end of the weekend our intention is to select a squad of 27 athletes so that we can spend the next ten months training as a team and not fighting for a position on the team," said Glen Gaudet, the Team Canada head coach.

"The depth of talent at the camp may make this task difficult and if necessary we will wait until our national championship to make the final decision."

Hannesson is a 20-year-old who plays defence for the B.C. Thunder in the National Ringette League. She has four goals and 13 assists in 17 games.

Wakefield has 27 goals and 82 points in 19 games.

Hannesson and Wakefield are also among the five Thunder players chosen for the NLL's all-star game. The game will be played Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Brian Kilrea Arena.

Joining the pair are Melanie Thomas, Tiina Mononen and Salla Kyhala.

Kyhala (56 goals, 95 points) and Mononen (25 goals, 72 points) are from Finland while Thomas is a defender from West Vancouver. Sh has one goal and 19 points on the season.
