Canada books spot in semifinals
It is through to the semifinals for Canada after a straight-sets victory over Mexico.
The Canadians were playing their second match of the 2013 NORCECA men's volleyball Continental championships at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday night.
And the team knew that a 3-0 victory would allow them to bypass the quarter-finals of the nine-team tournament and send them straight through to the semifinals.
Canada, ranked third in NORCECA and 11th in the FIVB world rankings, won a tight first set, 25-22, before taking sets two and three, 25-15 and 25-12, respectively.
Leading the way was John Gordon Perrin, who finished with 15 kills and five blocks.
The Canadians are seeded second for the six-team playoffs, finishing one point behind the U.S.
The United States entered the tournament ranked first in NORCECA and fifth in the world.
The quarter-finals will see Puerto Rico (1-1) face Mexico (1-1) in one match while Cuba (2-0) faces the Dominican Republic (1-1) in the other.
Both are on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.
Canada faces the winner of Cuba and the Dominican Republic while the U.S. awaits the winner of the Puerto Rico/Mexico clash.
The semifinals are Sept. 27, also at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The medal games will be on Sept. 28 with the bronze being contested at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 8 p.m.
