Silver lining for Xtreme
The Langley Xtreme nearly pulled off a remarkable turnaround, ultimately coming up one game short.
The 2001 U14 rep B girls softball team was competing at the provincial championships over the weekend in Delta and after a tough start — they went 0-4 in round robin and were relegated to the Silver division — rallied to capture the silver medal.
Even more impressive was the fact they were the lone 2001 squad to find the podium as all the rest were 2000 teams.
The Xtreme beat the South Delta Invaders 2001 9-2 in their first playoff game and then knocked off the Kelowna Heat 8-5 in extra innings to advance to the semifinals, where they beat Victoria 8-3.
But in the championship final against the Abbotsford Outlaws 2000, the combination of heat and likely fatigue caught up to the Xtreme who were playing their fourth game in less than 24 hours.
Langley looked to be in good position to win the gold medal after a 10-run fifth inning put them ahead 13-7.
The Outlaws scored the game’s final seven runs to edge the Xtreme 14-13.
The medal caps off an impressive season for the Langley squad, which medalled in five of the six tournaments, including four second-place finishes.
