Vancouver knocks off Western Conference-leading Prince George Cougars to break eight-game losing streak

It took a shootout, but the Vancouver Giants put a season-long losing streak to an end on Wednesday night.

The Giants — losers of eight straight (0-6-1-1) — defeated the Western Hockey League-leading Prince George Cougars by a score of 3-2 in a shootout.

The teams also played the night before with the Cougars winning 4-1. Both games were at Prince George’s CN Centre.

With the results, the Giants record sits at 18-32-2-3 for 41 points.

In Wednesday’s victory, David Tendeck made 38 saves and then stopped four of five Prince George shooters to earn his team the extra point.

The Giants were outshot 40-25 but only Jackson Leppard and Jared Bethune beat Tendeck.

Ty Ronning and Johnny Wesley scored second-period goals for Vancouver and then both players beat Cougars goalie Ty Edmonds during the shootout.

In Tuesday’s game, Jack Flaman had the lone Giants goal while Radovan Bondra, Bethune, Nikita Popugaev and Jesse Gabrielle struck for the home side.

Vancouver also lost twice over the weekend, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Calgary Hitmen on Friday at home and then 1-0 to the Everett Silvertips the next night in Everett.

The Giants are back in action tonight (Friday) as they begin a home-and-home series with the Kelowna Rockets. The teams are in Kelowna for the first leg before the teams hit the ice at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Vancouver also hosts the Tri-City Americans in a Family Day matinee on Monday at 2 p.m.
