Former Langley junior hockey star inks one-year deal with Ducks

Abbotsford’s Derek Grant has signed with the Anaheim Ducks.

The 27-year-old made it official on Saturday, inking a one-year/$650,000 deal with the California club.

Grant split time with the Buffalo Sabres and Nashville Predators in the 2016-17 NHL season, collecting four assists and 24 penalty minutes in 46 games. He also produced 19 points in 23 games with the AHL’s Rochester Americans.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators, Grant spent four seasons in the Ottawa system before stints in Calgary and the time in Buffalo and Nashville this year. He’s scored seven points in 86 career NHL games and 181 points in 315 AHL games. He earned a Calder Cup ring with the Binghamton Senators in 2011.

He played junior hockey with the Abbotsford Pilots and Langley Chiefs, before spending two years with the NCAA’s Michigan State Spartans.

Grant played two full seasons in the BCHL with the junior A Chiefs, recording 24 goals and 59 points in 53 games as a 17-year-old and then amassing 23 goals and 57 points in just 33 games in his 18-year-old season.

Grant and the Ducks next visit Vancouver to take on the Canucks on Jan. 2, 2018.
