Travel: Portugal tops USA poll on Best European Country to visit

Portugal beat out Italy, France, Germany, and Austria in an American magazine's readers poll for 2014's favourite destination.

One of Lisbon's famous Funiculars, a trolley that carries passengers around the city's hills and old town, through the Baixa Avenida and the Bairro Alto and Chiado.

So, where do Americans love to travel to most?

You might imagine Italy. Or Paris… because everyone loves France. Perhaps London, England. Even Spain might get some love.

But in a USA Today poll, Portugal received top marks from the magazine’s readers and was voted 2014’s ‘Best European Country’ to travel to.

“Much underrated Portugal has all the trappings of a pretty European country: cobbled villages beneath the shadows of medieval castles, sun-kissed beaches, a delectable culinary tradition and plenty of history to explore,” writes USA Today.

“Whether swimming in the turquoise waters of the Algarve, sipping a glass of port at a Porto cafe or listening to the melancholy lament of a fadista in Lisbon, Portugal’s understated beauty becomes obvious.”
