Dad says skatepark a breeding ground for problem behaviour

Editor: Parents should beware. There are places out there where you can watch a drug deal go down, open alcohol being consumed, as well as hear foul language and witness other undesirable acts.

As a parent, I need my children to know where you can go to be safe, and recognize times when it is not appropriate to be in places like this.

My child enjoys the local skateboard park. It is a place where kids “stay out of trouble” and occupy themselves in sports like BMX freestyling, scooters, and of course skateboarding.  I spend as much time as I can with my son at the skateboard park.

I am not ever comfortable having him go alone or with friends.

I have seen things right out of the movies.  There are expensive cars pulling up with young men handing out baggies and surrounded by happy customers (all of whom are high school students).

Yes, I do contact the police at times. I could every time I show up.

I choose to watch for more troublesome acts like drinking and driving, or fights. I encourage parents out there who know their kids attend the local skateboard park to show up some time and see what they are up to.

To see a kid who says he is in Grade 6 smoking a cigarette is a bit disturbing. This is a place to have fun and enjoy the sport. What I see is a breeding ground for all kinds of future problems.

That said, there are many who enjoy these places without the issues attached.  We usually go in the mornings. There are fewer extra activities, but not always.
