Famed Canadian Dr. Frederick Banting (right) along with his colleague Dr. Charles Best (left) made a giant leap forward in the treatment of diabetes with the discovery and development of insulin in the early1920s. Banting’s vital contribution to medicine is just one more reason Canadians have to be proud, says writer Angie Wheeler.

Letter: Important contribution omitted from Canada Day editorial

Editor: I appreciated the lovely Canada Day editorial, “Canadian eh?” including all the wonderful attributes which we should be proud of and which make up our Canadian character.

I would, however, hasten to add one more very important “invention” which was not mentioned in the piece. Dr. F. Banting, one of our earlier eminent Canadians, discovered and developed the precious insulin in 1921.

With his team of fellow workers, Dr. Banting changed and subsequently saved the lives of millions worldwide.

Angie Wheeler,
